How to export WhatsApp group contacts to Excel

WhatsApp has no button to download a group’s member list. Export contacts does it in three steps: pick the groups or chats, review who’s included and download the file.

1. Open Export contacts

On the Wapes Home screen, tap Export contacts. You’ll see three steps at the top: Choose, Review and Download.

2. Choose where the contacts come from

Wapes lists your groups and chats with activity, newest first. You can:

• Select several groups at once. If someone is in more than one, they appear only once.
• Open a group to pick members one by one, with search and an Admins filter. When you’re done, tap Done.
• Export your contact book: the first row, labelled Mi agenda completa (your full contact book), brings in every contact you have saved.

You don’t need to be a group admin to export it.

3. Review and download

Tap Continue to see the total, then pick a format:

• Excel (.xlsx) or CSV, with the columns nombre (name), telefono (phone), grupo_origen (which group they came from) and es_admin (is admin). The column headers are in Spanish. There is also a tiene_whatsapp column, which is empty for now.
• Contacts (.vcf): to import straight into your phone or Google Contacts.
• Copy: copies just the numbers, to paste wherever you like.

The name is the one saved in your contact book. If you haven’t saved the person, it’s the name they set on WhatsApp, and if there isn’t one either, the number. Numbers come out with the country code and without the + sign.

If a member shows as “Number unavailable”

In communities and some large groups, WhatsApp hides some members’ numbers. Wapes tries to recover them, and when it can’t, the member shows as Number unavailable.

If you pick members one by one, those can’t be selected. But if you export the whole group or select everyone, they end up in the file with a code ending in @lid instead of a number. Those rows can’t be messaged: delete them before you use the list.

The cap is per export, not per day. If your selection has more contacts than your cap, Wapes won’t export half of it: open the group and pick fewer members, or change plans.

From Excel to bulk sending

Below the formats, Load into Bulk send opens the bulk sender with those contacts already loaded. Note: it passes only the numbers, not the names. If you want to personalize with {{name}}, download the Excel and upload it in Bulk send with Load contacts.

Before you send, keep one thing in mind: being in the same group doesn’t mean those people have your number saved or expect your message. To WhatsApp, each one is a new chat, and messaging lots of people who don’t reply is what gets numbers restricted most.
